New Branding at JW&S…

The eagle-eyed of you may have noticed over the past few weeks, something a bit different about our usual labels as we’ve started to introduce something fresh to our traditional packaging…

Over the past few months, we’ve been getting our heads together to give a bit of a re-fresh to the John Watt & Son brand and packaging. A process that took us right back to our roots for inspiration and challenged us to express what we’re really all about here at John Watt & Son.

As our rich history is something we’re incredibly proud of here at John Watt & Son, we wanted to make sure we could try and bring our humble beginnings back to life when starting to think about our packaging. We began looking for inspiration by taking it right back to the start, revisiting our roots as a traditional grocers shop back in 1865 and thinking about the kind of colours, lettering and handmade touches this could bring to our new-look. 

Drawing stylistically from the original, hand-painted signage from The Cafe on Bank St. , our brand re-fresh really started with a new iteration of our logo. We also got to work digitising some illustrations from old John Watt & Son ephemera too which you can spot being used to distinguish between our new coffee and tea labels.

We then translated this into a number of ‘stamps’ that harked back to an era of visual language associated with our roots as an independent grocers, coffee roaster and tea merchant all those years ago, which we could now use on our new labels as a categorising tool for various roasts and blends!

Everything you buy from us, whether it’s over the counter at The Cafe on Bank St., or from our online shop at is hand-packed by our wonderful team here in Carlisle. Because of this, we were keen to reflect ‘hand drawn’ elements throughout our new design too!

Here at John Watt & Son we’re all about keeping it simple.

We think our delicious roasts & blends are enough to do the talking so we’ve kept our new labels minimal and simple to help them do just that, with just the essentials on there to let you know what’s what!

We’re also very keen to do as much as we can to be as sustainable as possible which is why we’ve worked hard to bring you something new without compromising on the recyclability of our bags!

In keeping our printing in house on paper labels, and continuing to use our completely compostable bags for both coffee and tea, we’ve managed to make the change to something fresh whilst keeping it easy for us and yourselves to continue to do our bit to help the planet!

We pride ourselves on good quality at John Watt & Son, so we’ve made sure that our packaging also sees that through, so much so, that our bags can be used again and again!
