Lamari Washed from Papua New Guinea is June’s coffee of the month here at John Watt and Son.

Papua New Guinea is a unique and vibrant coffee-growing country. Its rugged geography means that 85% of the coffee grown in the country is produced on smallholdings of less than 0.5 hectares (in other words, less than the size of a football pitch!).

This coffee is brought down from the hillsides after being dried on the smallholdings. The Lamari River Valley Coffee Gardens Mill then hulls, sorts and grades the various crops.

As a result of the differing coffee plant varietals, which are grown in diverse conditions across the area, the range of flavours produced when this coffee is brewed is quite remarkable.

Papua New Guinea Lamari Washed – Details

The Lamari Washed is from the Obura-Wonenara region of the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Here, it grows at altitudes of 1700 to 2000 metres above sea level. Due to the altitudinous location, the beans mature slower, which leads to beans with unique character.

The varieties that go into this coffee include Arusha, Blue Mountain and Typica. An aroma rich with chamomile flowers and a flavour boasting summer berries and brown sugar result from this intriguing mix of coffee varietals.
